Big brother 2006, by Dante Alighieri

The BBC reports that Designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has described the new Big Brother house as "the seventh circle of Hell", adding the creator is "an evil genius".

The seventh circle of hell, according to Dante, contained the violent people and was divided into three rings:

- Tyrants & murdurers (those violent against their neighbours). These souls are cast into a river of boiling blood.

- Suicides (those violent against themselves). These souls become trees in an unnatural forest, constantly stripped of all leaves by harpies.

- Blasphemers (those violent against God and nature). These souls also include sodomites. I would imagine Dante would be facing several sizeable law suits if he'd written that today.

This is more than scary and one has to hope that Mr. Llewelyn-Bowen doesn't quite understand the classical references he is making. Or are we to see disembowelings and ritual suicide in the next season? Is that what it takes, now that audiences have become so jaded, to keep the ratings up?

Personally I think that by portraying this mind-rotting garbage as genuine entertainment the creators should be cast into the eight circle, reserved for fraudulent souls. There they would be treated as sowers of discord and schism, who's souls were physically torn apart.

A fitting demise for anybody that invents a reality TV show I would say.
